The sea and the Ria de Aveiro give the city a set of specific characteristics that make it unique in the national urban system. One of the specific concerns the secular exploitation of salt that led to the settlement Aveiro. Which mirrored windows, permanently keep the salt in my imagination.

The salt produced is stored in conical heaps. To avoid exposure to rain with consequent dissolution of the salt, the mountains were initially covered with sedge or bajunça (abundant grass in the region) and land. The plastic was revolutionized coverage. The way yet more effective to store the salt is within the haystacks, wooden buildings.

The exposed barns are located in the pier Cais of S. Roque, long the salt trade center in Aveiro. Rectangular and gable plant on the street, the haystacks of S. Roque Pier have gabled roofs. The planking, painted vermilion, finds himself willing horizontally.

Coming of salt in kid lost hours enjoying the bustle of salt-boats to dock and effective. Like ants on a path, boats and towards the haystacks, salt was transported in baskets.

The seaweed is formed by aquatic plants that form in the submerged bed of the lagoon and it was used as a fertilizer on agricultural land margins. Applying this method, farmers turned sandy soils fertile and very productive land.

The moliceiros, whose construction technique is specific, are now tourist attraction of Ria with its colors and decorations suggestive and unique, perform the carriage of passengers on tours by the navigable channels of the lagoon.

The haystacks Costa Nova are famous and candlesticks existing striped beach houses with the same name, originally in shades of red ocher and black, used as old warehouses of fishing implements.

Until the beginning of the Costa Nova nineteenth century was an extensive uninhabited beach but after the fixation of the Port of Aveiro Barra, fishermen of fishing campaigns of Ílhavo moved to the Costa Nova and began building “haystacks” to keep the networks and other materials associated with fishing.

These were initially large, with no interior partitions and later divided with wooden partitions that were ‘decorated’ with oyster shells. At the same time, the families of its members, clerks and “skipper” of other companies were drawn to the area in the summer months and fall, transforming them in the current “haystacks” with colored stripes and the “bourgeois fashion go baths “the second half of this century, so that they could serve as housing in the bathing season.

The Ship Museum Santo André is a Ílhavo Maritime Museum. He was part of the Portuguese fleet of cod and is intended to illustrate the drag arts. This side trawler (or “classic”) was born in 1948 in the Netherlands by order of Aveiro Fishing Company. It was a modern ship, with 71.40 meters long and basement for twenty thousand fish yards (1,200 tons).

In the eighties came restrictions on fishing in open waters which resulted in the reduction of the fleet and the slaughter of much of it. The Santo André has not escaped the trend. The August 21, 1997 was dismantled. The owner of the vessel, António do Lago Cerqueira, Lda (Fisheries Tavares Mascarenhas, SA) and the Municipality of Aveiro decided to turn the old St. Andrew in museum ship. In August 2001, St. Andrew started a new cycle of life: show gifts and come as were the cod fisheries drag and honor the memory of all his
crew during half a century of activity.

The Ship Museum is anchored in Oudinot Garden in the city of Gafanha of Nazareth, the city of Aveiro.

Also the travel of cod captains to other parts of the globe, and his taste for modern, coupled with the pragmatic nature of the Sea Men, favored the acquisition of taste for this style in the early twentieth century.

For these two reasons, and also for local and regional tradition in the production and ceramic painting, it is not surprising that many aspects included in the buildings of the beginning of this century, sometimes combined with influences from other architectural and artistic styles.

The most common Art New elements found on the site are the use of tiles (especially since, in the region, having implemented several factories, even during the nineteenth century), applied in many different ways, wrought iron present at the gates, balconies and windows, the use of wood (interiors of buildings and windows) and also colored glasses.

What makes relevant the Art Nouveau style in this area O built the set and the details of implementation in a significant number of buildings, in various forms, is to be found various architectural styles in one building.

The two villas Papoila (Poppy) (consecutive: Magano and Cruz), are two fine examples of Art Nouveau with tiles application.

Where in Ílhavo

Rua de Camões with Avenida 25 de Abril

Rua de Santo António, 19 and 64

Rua de Santo António (nº 19) – Vila Africana, It is classified as a cultural heritage building and is beautiful the whole building and the walls. Wrought iron, tile gables, sculptural works carved on the facade and the walls, the staircase and the colors used, everything fits in a set that is both Art Nouveau but also exemplary in its variant of this region.
